As someone who’s passionate about technology and governance, I’ve spent countless hours scouring the internet, hopping from one website to another, trying to gather insights on how governments worldwide are leveraging digital tools to serve their citizens better.

The thing is, there’s a wealth of information out there, but it’s scattered across various platforms, reports, and databases…… It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. And even when you do stumble upon something useful, it’s often just a small piece of the puzzle.

Moreover, I believe that the absence of a unified platform for mapping global digital government initiatives means that valuable insights and best practices often remain siloed within individual countries or regions. This fragmented approach can really inhibit collaboration, stifle innovation, and bring in more inefficiencies than efficiencies when it comes to digital solutions for governance.

In essence, the challenge lies not only in accessing information but also in synthesising and contextualising it within a broader global framework. It’s about connecting the dots, identifying trends, AND distilling key learnings that can inform and inspire policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders worldwide.

Knowing all this, GovInsider launched a digital government directory (DigiGov) that maps key digital government organisations globally on 26 March 2024.

The mapping initiative for global digital government by GovInsider is off to an impressive start, featuring insights from 66 countries and counting. But it’s not just about the numbers; it’s about connections and collaboration among practitioners, academics, civil society actors, and thought leaders in the field.

According to GovInsider, this mapping initiative aims to fill that void by providing a centralised hub for the global digital government community to come together and exchange ideas.

The initial launch showcases the digitalisation efforts of 66 countries, highlighting the key roles played by their respective digitalisation agencies.

But this is just the beginning…. Apparently, GovInsider envisions this mapping initiative evolving into a dynamic and collaborative community resource driven by the contributions and insights of its members.

I think GovInsider’s digital government directory is a fantastic initiative that shines a spotlight on the key players driving digital government initiatives worldwide. It’s like a one-stop shop where you can explore the various digital transformation efforts happening across different countries.

Right now, the interactive map might seem a bit sparse in terms of information. You can mainly see which agencies are leading the charge in advancing digital governance strategies. But I’m optimistic that this will change soon.

Currently, the map mainly highlights the responsible agencies driving digital governance strategies and initiatives. While this is helpful, I’m excited to see GovInsider’s promise to share stories about the main principles and goals of different countries. This will provide valuable insights into how governments are approaching digital transformation and the impact it’s having on their citizens.
