e-Health services in Europe: Malta leading the way
Recent statistics from the European Commission’s eGovernment Benchmark show that, while access to most public services online has generally increased, there is still a wide digital divide between the countries surveyed when it comes to the provision of digital healthcare services.
While Malta has yet to establish a reputation for innovation in digital government services, it is the first country among 27 EU states when it comes to offer e-health services.
Since 2014, the small island has emphasized the importance of using ICT to improve access to healthcare, among other public services.
The island’s small physical size is thought to have given the government an edge in the results of their digitisation efforts – yet, the value of their efforts cannot be overstated.
