Belgium’s Digital Services Act

The EU Digital Services Act became fully applicable to online intermediaries and platforms operating in Europe. The European Commission will enforce the DSA together with national authorities, who will supervise the compliance of the platforms established in their territory.

In Belgium, the Council of Ministers recently approved a preliminary draft law designating BIPT as Belgium’s Digital Services Coordinator, tasked with the alignment of DSA enforcement with the competent regional authorities.

Belarus Digitalization

Chairman of the Board of the Development Bank of Belarus Aleksandr Yegorov said at the Digital Almaty 2024 forum, Belarus is set to keep digitalizing administrative procedures and public services.

Digitalization of administrative procedures and public services is coming to the forefront today. It makes services faster and cheaper for the public and the government. I think this aspect of digitalization will take on new significance in Belarus in the near future.

Barbados Digital Identity System

Barbados is set to enter a new era of digital identity management with the full implementation of its digital ID system scheduled for this year. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology, aims to streamline access to government services and enhance security through online authentication.

Proponents of the digital ID system highlight its potential to improve convenience, efficiency, and security. Streamlined online access to services could significantly reduce wait times and administrative burdens.

Bahrain - Saudi Digital Collaboration

Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, Chief Executive of Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA), received Ahmed Mohammed Al Suwaiyan, Saudi Governor and Board Member of the Digital Government Authority (DGA). The meeting discussed cooperation between the two kingdoms in the digital government sector.

The CEO praised the historic Bahraini-Saudi relations, affirming the importance of exchanging expertise and successful digital experiences in broadening the benefits at the GCC level.

Bahamas Digital Currency

In October 2020, The Bahamas launched the world’s first central bank digital currency (CBDC), the SandDollar. Three years on, as CBDC testing and development takes off worldwide, Derek Sean Rolle, Deputy Governor, Central Bank of the Bahamas, shares SandDollar’s story so far.

The SandDollar is a digital representation of the Bahamian dollar, with the same rights as banknotes or coins, designed to be used on mobile wallet platforms. Unlike cryptocurrencies, which are stored-value digital assets, the SandDollar is true legal tender, its stability and value backed by foreign reserves.

The growth of the digital economy has been significant in recent years, driven by advancements in technology such as the internet, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.

Effective regulation in the digital economy indeed requires a collaborative effort among various stakeholders, including governments, businesses, and other key participants.

Austrian Digital Transformation

Austrian Members of Parliament (MPs) have observed a lack of transparency of resources budgeted for digitalization. This prompted a request to the Parliamentary Budget Office to assess the transparency of Austria’s budget and other public documents and give an overview about resources for digitalization.

The budget contains a lot of information about digitalization projects, however, but lacks a systematic and strategically oriented presentation. Digitalization activities and projects are normally integrated into the different global budgets.

Armenia’s Digital Transformation

Armenia’s Prime Minister called for the creation of a national working group to address the country’s digital sector challenges and policies, following a consultation on 15 December 2023. Representatives of about 30 large IT companies met with government officials to discuss the issues and assess policies for the sector’s development.

The consultation was chaired by Nikol Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, who called for a new working group to follow up on the issues raised and to develop a model for effective solutions.

Antigua and Barbuda Digitalization

The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda has committed to a complete digitalization of the country’s public services by 2030. This decision comes following the completion of UNDP’s Digital Readiness Assessment (DRA), which sets out actionable insights and recommendations to shape the country’s national digital strategy towards the acceleration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Covering five key pillars of digital transformation, the DRA focused on government, regulation, infrastructure, the digital economy, and people. Insights were combined with feedback from a range of stakeholders.
